We were thrilled to support Calum Taylor, a Lead Operator at Gestamp, on his Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship.
Calum’s journey to achieving a Distinction was not straightforward. Throughout his school years, he faced significant literacy barriers. He was often told that academic success might not be realistic and that further study was not worth the effort.
Despite these challenges, Calum established a successful career and developed strong technical expertise. Today, he holds a leadership role at Gestamp. With self-belief, he enrolled in the Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship, and we are delighted that he achieved a Distinction!

The Functional Skills exit policy change, introduced by the Department for Education, has supported learners like Calum. Historically, apprentices were required to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths to access selected apprenticeships.
This policy change has removed barriers to entry for some courses. It enables experienced and capable professionals to demonstrate their occupational competence without being restricted by historical academic achievement.
