Making a Difference with an Engineering & Manufacturing Team Leader Apprenticeship

At NC Group Ltd, we are proud to support learners as they develop practical skills and progress in their careers.

Through our apprenticeship programme, we enable individuals to develop confidence and build skills. We were delighted to support Calum Taylor, a Lead Operator at Gestamp, on his Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship.

Calum’s journey to achieving a Distinction was not straightforward. Throughout his school years, he faced literacy barriers. It was said to him that academic success might not be realistic, and further study was not worth the effort.

Despite this, Calum has established a successful career, developed strong technical expertise, and today holds a leadership role at Gestamp. With self-belief, he enrolled on the Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship, and we are delighted that he achieved a Distinction!

Breaking the Barriers

When Calum received confirmation that he had achieved a Distinction, he described feeling “absolutely chuffed and over the moon”.

This outstanding result reflects the hard work and commitment he has given to his apprenticeship:

  • Overcoming barriers

  • Building confidence

  • Developing leadership capability

  • Positively approaching his formal assessment

  • Challenging long-held beliefs

Calum’s success demonstrates we must not define academic potential by early educational experiences. With the right support, course, training, structure and encouragement, every learner has the potential to achieve exceptional results.

“Calum’s journey has been incredibly inspiring to watch. He was determined to move on from his earlier educational experience and show his true potential. Over the course of the programme, his confidence in communication, leadership and structured thinking grew significantly. I am so proud of him achieving a Distinction.” – Julie Gorman, Apprenticeship Tutor, NC Group.

Functional Skills Reform

The Functional Skills exit policy change, introduced by the Department for Education, has supported learners like Calum.

Historically, apprentices were required to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths to access selected apprenticeships.

The policy change has removed this barrier to entry for some courses, enabling experienced and capable professionals to demonstrate their occupational competence and not be restricted by historical academic achievement.

Engineering & Manufacturing Industry Leaders

Leadership development programmes in engineering and manufacturing environments help to establish strong operational leaders who can directly influence team performance, productivity, and workplace culture.

Learners develop skills including:

  • Team leadership and supervision in an engineering and manufacturing environment

  • Effective communication in the workplace

  • Problem-solving and decision-making

  • Performance management and team development

  • Operational planning and organisation

These skills enable employees to lead with confidence while supporting their teams to deliver consistent results.

The Impact of Apprenticeships

By combining structured learning with real workplace experience, apprenticeship programmes help organisations strengthen both their workforce capability and long-term business performance:

  • Develop internal talent

  • Strengthen employee confidence and capability

  • Improve productivity and team performance

  • Retain experienced employees by supporting career progression
