In the latest Getting To Know You in Aycliffe Business Magazine, our very own Brian Corker, winner of the lifetime achievement award at the 2025 Make Your Mark Awards, is featured….
What was your favourite subject at school?
Physics. As a teenager, I was fascinated by machines, mechanisms and problem solving. It is probably why I went into engineering and then into training others.
Who was your childhood hero, and why?
My father. He showed me what is possible through hard work and determination, and he always supported me in everything I tried.
How did you get to where you are now?
I started my career as a mechanical apprentice at Thorn Ltd and was sponsored through the University of Bradford, where I achieved a BSc in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. I then worked at DSRM before moving into education as an engineering lecturer at Darlington College and then SWDT. I later joined NC Group as Lead Practitioner, where I now help students achieve their goals.
Which is your favourite organisation on Aycliffe Business Park and why (excluding your own)?
I’ve worked with so many innovative companies. It is hard to pick just one, but what stands out is the collaborative spirit across the park.
Which Aycliffe business or individual do you tip for future success?
There are several, but if I had to pick one, it would be Viper RF, which is pushing the boundaries of engineering and is well placed to succeed.
What’s the best business decision you ever made?
Choosing an engineering apprenticeship. That one decision determined my entire career. It provided practical skills and hands-on experience, opening the door to so many opportunities.
What’s the worst decision you’ve ever made?
In the past, I left one role for another, and it felt like the worst decision. Looking back, it was an important learning experience and had I not taken that step, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
If you could change one thing about your organisation, what would it be?
Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m proud of what we do at NC Group and the difference we make. The team is passionate, forward-thinking and dedicated to helping the next generation of engineering and manufacturing professionals succeed. As I like to say, we just need to keep on doing what we’re doing.
Are you an early riser or a night owl?
An early riser. I like to start the day early, organised and prepared, whether for work or home life.
What is your business mantra?
Nothing is impossible. I really believe that, whether it’s succeeding in a qualification, a skill, or a career. It’s a principle I try to instil in all my students.
What advice would you give to a small startup?
Work hard and believe in what you’re doing. Learn from others, listen, adapt and never underestimate the power of persistence.
What does the future look like for you?
I want to continue doing what I’m doing, developing the next generation and helping them succeed. It’s what motivates me.
What does the future look like for your organisation?
The future looks bright for NC Group. It’s a great and experienced team committed to continually evolving training provision, embracing new technologies and preparing students for the future.
What would you say to the prime minister if you saw him on Aycliffe Business Park?
Invest in our young people. Give them the skills, support and opportunities they need to succeed. They are the innovators, problem-solvers and leaders of tomorrow.
Which is your favourite local charity?
NC Group’s chosen charity, Quinn’s Retreat, which provides peaceful, supportive breaks for people bereaved or affected by suicide. Their work is a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting mental health. It’s a charity I’m proud to support.
Which is your favourite local restaurant?
Betty’s Fish and Chips in Durham. There’s something really comforting about a traditional fish and chip shop, especially one where you can sit down and enjoy them with family and friends.
What would be your ideal evening meal?
A chicken balti curry. There’s nothing better than enjoying it while relaxing in front of a great tv show.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Hiking in the Durham Dales. It’s a great way to clear my mind, enjoy nature and keep fit.
What is your favourite film, and who is your favourite actor?
Blade Runner. I love science fiction and futuristic movies. Unsurprisingly, Harrison Ford is my favourite actor.
What would you like to see more of?
Collaborative creativity. I believe that when people work together, share ideas, and think outside of the box, amazing things happen.
